A summer of rave reviews and wet weather helped boost audience numbers at Cromer's pier show by 10pc.

As the curtain came down on the 2015 season Rory Holburn from show producers Openwide said it had been seen by 32,000 people.

The success was put down to a good show that attracted favourable reviews, including in the showbusiness magazine The Stage.

And wet weather, which always helped indoor seaside attractions, had helped, along with not running any one night Sunday concerts at the pier as competition during the summer show run.

'The main show is what we need to protect and we had the highest number of full houses since 2005,' said Mr Holburn.

'We aim to entertain people at the end of a heritage attraction with a variety format but with action from today.'

The end-of-season combination show draws from both alternating productions with music ranging from Uptown Funk to Oklahoma, mixed with comedy, and dance.

Winning the national Pier of the Year award was also a bonus for the venue and show said Mr Holburn.

Chairman of the National Piers Society Tim Wardley said Cromer was one of just five remaining piers hosting summer shows. There used to be 80. And the only one doing a full weekly season.

He praised Openwide's West End production values and knowledge of the Cromer audience, which also helped grow the show's reputation.

Next summer will see the return of a familiar face, Phil Butler, as headline comic. Before that the Christmas show opens on November 28 starring Norfolk entertainer Olly Day and another returnee Lulu Alexander.
