A man has been ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work after being found guilty of assaulting his partner.

Ilias Korakianitis, 41, of Norris Court, Wagon and Horses Lane, Norwich, appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court yesterday.

He had previously been found guilty of assault by beating at a trial in January.

Philip Charnley, prosecuting, said Korakianitis' then partner had been visiting Korakianitis' home in October last year when an argument developed between the two of them because he would not accept his partner's word that she was not being unfaithful.

Mr Charnley said Korakianitis' partner had wanted to leave but she said he blocked the hallway, picked up a hall mirror and threw it against the wall.

The court heard that a statement by Korakianitis' partner described how things became violent, that she felt a whack across the back of her head, and that Korakianitis had said to her it may knock some sense into her.

In the statement Korakianitis' partner also described how he bit her left hand and punched her about four times to the back of her head.

Gavin Cowe, defending, said that during the trial evidence had been heard from a neighbour who had indicated that both parties had been arguing as badly as each other and that they seemed upset at the breakdown of the relationship.

Mr Cowe said Korakianitis was a man of previous good character.

Korakianitis was given a 12 month community order with a six-month supervision requirement.

He was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work as well as pay 200 compensation and a contribution of 100 towards court costs.

A restraining order was also put in place banning Korakianitis from contacting his former partner in any way.
