The owner of a Norwich jewellers' has today spoken of his anger after a robbery in which about 50,000 worth of diamond rings were stolen.

Police were called to Aurum at just after 4pm on Tuesday following reports of a robbery at the Bedford Street-based jewellers.

But despite admitting he was 'angry' being a victim of robbery, owner Jon Maddocks has insisted he does not want to have to increase security levels at the business which is already protected by several CCTV cameras and a panic alarm.

He said: 'We've had a couple of incidents over the years but nothing quite of this level of value - this was quite a high value amount of stock taken. It's in the region of 50,000 worth of diamond rings.

'You shouldn't have to deal with things like that. It's not a pleasant experience that's for sure. We don't want to change the way we operate - we don't want locks on our doors. Customers come in and we encourage them to come in and browse and feel they're in a relaxed atmosphere without having to have huge security on the doors.

'We don't plan changing that in the near future but if things happen in Norwich then things need to change. There are cities around the country where there isn't a jewellers that has an open door policy but that's not the case in Norwich at the moment. It would be very sad if that had to change.'

Mr Maddocks, 60, said following the robbery, the offender, who was caught on CCTV, initially fled down a dead end giving staff the opportunity to see the route he took when he eventually left the scene.

He said: 'We reacted very quickly and the police were here very quickly.'

A 29-year-old man from Norwich has been arrested on suspicion of robbery following the incident at a Aurum.

He will also be questioned in connection with robberies at Betfred on Hall Road in the city on Wednesday, October 19, and at William Hill on Old Palace Road in Norwich on Friday, October 28.

He is currently in police custody where he is being questioned by detectives.
