Plea for more volunteers to help rid Norwich streets of Graffiti

A plea has been issued for volunteers to help continue to combat the issue of graffiti in the city centre - by attending paint out sessions.

The Evening News Graffitibusters campaign, supported by Norwich police along with Norwich City Council, the Central Norwich Citizens Forum and the Norwich City Centre Partnership, was launched earlier this year. It has already attracted dozens of volunteers, armed with brushes, to attend paint-out sessions.

As reported last month the concerted campaign is set to continue after graffiti was made a policing priority for another three months at a meeting of the city centre's Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel (SNAP).

But those heading up the campaign have issued a call for help from volunteers to attend further paint outs organised in the city.

The next event takes place on Sunday<11>between noon and 2pm with the following session pencilled in for Sunday, December 18 between noon and 2pm. For both sessions volunteers should meet at Bethel Street Police Station at 11.45am.

Sergeant Pete Sharples of the City Centre Safer Neighbourhood team said he would welcome volunteers to attend future paint out events in the city.

He said: 'We're looking to extend the campaign to include other areas of Norwich so we want to keep the impetus of the whole effort and the thrust of the idea going.

'We would welcome volunteers to come along to support the campaign. They should wear clothing that they don't mind getting paint splattered on.'

As previously reported Graffitibusters campaign was launched after the City Centre Safer Neighbourhood policing team (SNT) agreed to make graffiti one of its priorities earlier in the summer.

Speaking last month, Inspector Chris Brooks, from the City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: 'The project has and continues to be extremely successful and in improving the city's appearance by removing eyesore graffiti from buildings and walls.'
