An 86-year-old has avoided a driving ban after telling magistrates how vital his car was to him.

George Cope, of Meadow Lane, Rollesby, was at risk of losing his licence after being caught speeding on Southtown Road in Great Yarmouth.

Prosecutor Gemma Whitehouse told Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Monday that Cope was caught travelling 35mph in a 30mph zone on January 17, 2017.

The pensioner, who pleaded guilty to the offence, already had nine points on his licence.

Cope, who used a Zimmer frame to get around the court, said he needed a car to go food shopping and get to the local cafe for lunch.

“Without transport I am going to find it very hard,” he said.

Cope added that the shops and cafe were not within walking distance.

Chair of the bench, Cathy Dobson, said: “We realise how vital your car is to you.”

Cope received three points and a £55 fine.
