More than 600 TV Licence dodgers caught in Norwich

More than 600 people in and around Norwich have been caught watching TV without a licence in the first six months of this year.

Figures from TV Licensing show 380 licence dodgers were caught in Great Yarmouth and 130 in King’s Lynn, taking Norfolk’s total to 1,300.

Elsewhere 197,000 people were caught watching TV without a licence across the UK during the first six months of 2011.

Officials estimate the evasion rate at 5pc.

TV Licensing’s Pauline Gillingham said:

“While the vast majority of people in the UK pay their licence fee, to be fair to those who pay, we have to be firm with those who try to get away without paying.”

A colour TV Licence currently costs £145.50 and is required by anyone watching or recording programmes on TV or aa computer.

Those without risk a fine of up to £1,000.
