A homeless man who was badly beaten in an unprovoked attack in Norwich city centre has been discharged from hospital.

The 60-year-old man, who other homeless people said is known as Old Man Billy, was attacked as he sat in his sleeping bag underneath the Novi Sad Friendship Bridge.

He was kicked in the head in the attack, which happened at about 1.30am last Wednesday (April 13), and had to be taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for treatment.

Police, who described the attack as “totally unprovoked” confirmed that he was discharged from hospital late on Monday night.

Charities, including the YMCA and the St Martin’s Housing Trust condemned the attack.

Police have appealed for information about the attack. Call Pc Keith Oldmeadow on 0845 4564567 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
