Motorists are advised to be vigilant after a number of cars have been broken into while their owners were in a Norwich sportscentre.

Burglars have targeted vehicles parked in the overflow car park at the Football Development centre in Clover Hill Road, Bowthorpe.

The first incident on December 7, 2010 saw four cars broken into and on January 6 a further three cars were broken in to. Both incidents happened in the evening.

A spokesman from Norfolk County FA said: 'The FDC is fitted with both internal and external CCTV and the car park at the centre is also lit with overhead lighting.

'The incidents that have occurred look like the work of professionals, as we have been made aware of other local sports facilities that have also been targeted in recent weeks. We have always communicated to our users the need to not leave valuables in their cars whilst playing at the centre, instead using the lockers provided as part of our changing facilities.

'Following these unfortunate criminal acts, the need to be vigilant has obviously been reemphasised.'

A spokesman for Norfolk Constabulary said: 'Police are reminding people not to leave valuables in their cars after several thefts. Four vehicles were broken into on the evening of January 6 at the Football Development Centre in Bowthorpe. Items taken include a sat nav, mobile phones, wallets and bank cards. Local police and staff at the Football Development Centre are urging people not to leave valuables in their cars when attending sporting events, but to take them with them and use the free lockers available at the centre.

'Any witnesses to these incidents or anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area between the times stated are asked to contact the Bowthorpe and Costessey Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0845 456 4567 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

'Norfolk constabulary offers the following advice to prevent your vehicle becoming a target: don't leave anything on display in your car, take your belongings with you when you leave the car – if you can't, lock them in the boot before you start your journey, and fit an electronic immobiliser – this will prevent the car from starting .'
