Hundreds of people in Costessey were encouraged to reuse and recycle their electrical items at a Give and Take event.

Nearly 200 unwanted televisions, toasters, hairdryers, vacuum cleaners and small electrical goods were given to new owners and 960 items were taken away for recycling on Tuesday.

Those which still worked were tested by an electrician who was on site. People took second-hand items away for free and donated 160 to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Anything which could not be used was taken away by Social Enterprise Impact East to be restored and reused, or recycled, including a total of 189 televisions.

The Give and Take event, which was organised by South Norfolk Council and Broadland District Council, was held at Longwater Lane recreation ground.

Bob Wade, environmental protection manager for Broadland District Council, said: 'There has been an excellent reception, it was a successful day. It was well attended and well received by residents. People have donated items that they don't want to throw away but are happy to pass on to a new home.'
