A devoted Guides leader has received an award as recognition of her hard work despite suffering from a terminal illness.

Hayley Newman, 41, from Spixworth, was presented with a Girlguiding Commendation for all the work she has given to Girlguiding over the past 29 years. Mrs Newman was a Brownie and a Guide, progressing to Senior Section as a Ranger Guide.

She was visited by Girlguiding district commissioner Emma Davison, together with county leadership co-ordinator Patricia Threadgold, at Priscilla Bacon Lodge, pictured.

In 1982 she was awarded the Queen's Guide Award and Patricia said this award helped drive Hayley on, saying: 'By receiving that award it encouraged Hayley to continue in Girlguiding.

'She has worked her way through to running and organising units in Sprowston and Old Catton areas, albeit Hayley has suffered and is suffering from a terminal illness.

'This has been a great achievement considering what Hayley is enduring.'
