Caterpillar crawl through the trees helps Norwich pupils raise cash
Submitted - July 2011
A Norwich school with just 180 pupils has raised almost £1,000 for Norfolk & Waveney's local cancer charity, Big C.
"It just shows what can be done when you work together for a good cause."
Pupils at Nelson Infant School, on Northumberland Street, off Dereham Road, completed Big C’s Caterpillar Crawl and raised £960.93 by asking family and friends to sponsor them.
They made caterpillar crowns and completed a circuit as one giant caterpillar through their “tree-walk” play area – wooden bridges running through trees –by copying the moves of the child in front of them.
Big C have recently decided to fund neuropsychology test material for children, which will be based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to help children suffering with brain tumours.
The material will measure the effect of tumours and the treatment regimes on children’s intellectual ability, memory and school achievement, and will also help doctors find the right level of care and treatment for each child.
The children of Nelson School and their families have helped this cutting edge piece of equipment become a reality at the N&N.
Libby Double-King, mum of Nelson School pupil, Chilali, seven, said: “We’re overwhelmed by how much the children have raised. It just shows what can be done when you work together for a good cause.
“Hopefully this means the message that Big C is helping people locally in Norfolk and Waveney is being understood by local families now. The response from all families of the children who took part has been amazing.”
Big C also fund the Big C Cancer Support and Information Centre, based at the N&N. The centre supports local cancer patients and their families with practical and emotional support. The welfare rights service has recently been extended to cover the greater Norfolk and Waveney area.
