Campaigners fighting to create a new community centre in Norwich have said they believe their dream is getting close to becoming a reality.

The Friends of the Silver Rooms group have been in talks with Norfolk County Council over leasing the Silver Road building to use it for the community when it stops being used as a day centre.

After a two-year campaign, the group recently presented a draft business plan to Norfolk County Council outlining how they plan to turn it into a community centre.

But now the group wants to give the area a taste for the sorts of groups and organisations which might be based in the Silver Rooms in the future.

They have organised a showcase to take place at the centre on Sunday, October 9 and today urged even more groups to get involved in that event.

Julie Brociek-Coulton, Labour city councillor and one of the committee members, said: 'It's going to be a bit of a taster for the sort of thing which could go on at the centre.

'We've got Olly Day entertaining and holding the day together and then there will be 30-minute slots for groups and organisations to say what they are all about.

'It's all about showing what the centre might be used for in the future.'

SureStart, Care For Carers and MIND are among the organisations which have already signed up for the showcase.

She said the group has another meeting with the county council next month to discuss the business plan and that positive progress was being made.

Ms Brociek-Coulton said: 'We've been talking about a peppercorn rent for it and how we'd like to change it around a bit at the back so we can have more rooms for groups to rent.

'We'd like to have a lunch club in there every day and we really want it to be all about the community.'
