A competition has been launched to name an ale which is being brewed to help Normandy veterans and their carers return to France to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in June 2014.

Wolf Brewery, from Attleborough, is producing a special cask ale to help raise £20,000 to fund the trip, and it will donate 10p from each pint bought at this year's City of Ale festival in Norwich.

The beer will be a 3.8pc traditional chestnut-coloured British best bitter, brewed with English Goldings and Challenger hops.

It will be available in many of the Norwich pubs taking part in the third City of Ale Festival, which runs from May 23 to June 2.

The winning name will be chosen by the veterans and will have a specially designed pump clip.

The prize for the winning name is an 18-pint demi-pin of the ale plus a pair of tickets to the City of Ale launch party on May 23, where the prize will be awarded.

Jack Woods, secretary of the Norwich and District branch of the Normandy Veterans' Association, said: 'Thanks to Wolf Brewery for its support of our campaign to raise funds. Our watchword is 'Not one shall be forgotten' and not one is.'

Kay Edwards, director of Wolf Brewery, said: 'We will donate 10p for every pint of this specially named beer that is bought during the City of Ale festival and would encourage all beer drinkers to support this very worthy cause.'

The next open meeting of City of Ale is on Monday, March 18 at 10am at the Rose Inn, Queens Road, Norwich.

Suggestions for a name for the new beer should be received by Friday, April 5, and the winner will be announced later that month. Suggestions should be emailed to competition@cityofale.org.uk with 'Normandy Ale' in the subject line.
