The mother of a 17-year-old girl is campaigning for a crossing to be installed on a busy road near Norwich after her daughter was knocked down by a car.

Monica Barnham wants to see a pedestrian crossing or traffic island put in on Constitution Hill opposite the Catton Veterinary Surgery near to the Woodman pub.

The call for action comes after her daughter, Louise, was knocked down by a car at the spot while trying to cross the road.

The teenager, who is a pupil at the sixth form of Notre Dame High School, had just got off the bus and was trying to cross the road at about 5pm on Wednesday, January 12 when she was struck.

She suffered a fractured shoulder and cuts and bruises in the crash which has left her shaken up and frightened at the prospect of having to cross the road again - which she has to do every day to get home from school.

Mrs Barnham, 43, from Meadow Gardens, off Constitution Hill, said: 'She was very shaken up by the experience. 'Since it happened I've been down there and crossed the road with her but she's anxious about it and there still not anywhere safe for her to cross which she has to do every day as she's dropped off there.'

The mother-of-four said she now plans to lobby Norfolk County Council as well as contacting her county councillor and MP to try and get something done to make that part of the road safer before someone else is injured or killed.

She said: 'Although the driver was not at fault, I am very concerned about the traffic on the road where she was hit.

'I'm sure I'm not the only person to be concerned about this stretch of road which is very difficult to cross safely. The cars that come off the ring road from the roundabout are invariably travelling far too fast and it is difficult to cross where the traffic lights are at the Woodman Pub as the traffic never comes to a complete standstill from every direction.

'I'm planning to lobby the council to put in a pedestrian crossing or even a traffic island to make crossing easier. Even some speed humps to slow the traffic down would help. I just want something to be done to make it safer.'

The Evening News contacted Norfolk County Council about the possibility of installing a crossing but no-one was available for comment.
