Kathy John said her daughter's Renault Clio was badly scratched after she used the service at the company's Drayton Road store back in May.

It had been caused by another vehicle's aerial becoming lodged in the brushes earlier that day.

Mrs John claimed Asda initially told her it would pay for any repairs, but then allegedly changed its position and refused to accept liability.

It resulted in her daughter, who is 22, having to pay the £400 insurance excess and losing her no claims bonus.

Mrs John, 60, said: 'It is a pity, that having showed an intention to pay at the beginning, they [Asda] then went back on that, which caused a very stressful situation.

'My daughter was trying to move from Norwich and to start a new job at the time. She didn't need to be landed with a £400 bill as well.'

Asda said the incident was 'out of its control', and that its car washes have clear signs explaining the terms for safe use.

But after being contacted by this newspaper, it is understood the company has agreed to pay the insurance excess.

When Mrs John asked whether the offending car's image had been caught on CCTV, she was allegedly told that the cameras did not work.

Meanwhile. Autodoc in Norwich confirmed that it had provided quotes to several other drivers whose vehicles had been damaged by the car wash.

A spokesman for Asda said: 'Customer satisfaction is very important to us and we are currently in talks with Ms John's insurers to reach a resolution for all parties involved. We would like to reassure our customers that regular checks are conducted on the car wash at Norwich and that it is in full working order.'
