Tesco is to cut 1,700 jobs from the shop floor in its largest stores.

The supermarket will be removing to role of people manager in 757 stores and in seven fulfilment centres, while the removal of the role of compliance manager will impact staff in 667 stores.

The role of customer experience manager will also be axed in 226 Extra stores.

Tesco said the changes would “simplifying its operational structure” and improve efficiency and accountability.

It added that 900 new roles, with broader remits, will be created as people partners, learning partners and colleague relations partners, working across multiple sites.

A new colleague administration role will also be created to support management team in large stores and fulfilment centres.

Matt Davies, Tesco chief executive for the UK and Ireland, said: “We recognise these are difficult changes to make but they are necessary to ensure our business remains competitive and set up for the future.

“Our priority now is to support affected colleagues through these changes in any way we can. We hope to retain as many colleagues as possible in the new roles we have created and in the vacancies we currently have available.”

Tesco has more than 300,000 staff in its stores across the UK.
