Cashless payments leapt last year with a 79% increase in spending in 2017.

The East of England was among the regions leading the way with Norwich seeing a 54% annual increase in contactless spending, the fourth highest across the UK, according to Barclaycard.

The biggest changes in sector spending were found in railways and car parks, with 235% and 132% increases respectively.

Transactions made using mobile phones increased 365% while those through wearable devices went up 129% in the year.

Adam Herson, business development director at Barclaycard Mobile Payments, said the rise was down to the popularity of wearable and mobile payments devices.

Consumers can now choose the type of accessory or device they want and match it to their lifestyle or fashion taste,
all while enjoying the speed, ease and convenience that contactless brings,”
he added.
