Council hopes £150,000 investment will help put Snetterton Heath in the fast lane

Plans to accelerate the growth of a business area close to a Norfolk racing circuit will go before councillors next week.
Cabinet members in Breckland are being asked by officers to give the green light to a £150,000 investment aiming to put the Snetterton Heath industrial area firmly in the fast lane.
The investment, the latest in a number of strategies focusing on the site, would cover a range of promotional material designed to attract further businesses to the area.
It comes as officers rue previous difficulties in attracting new businesses to the site, where a new £3.4m substation will be built to improve the power supply.
In a report to cabinet, Robert Campbell, an investment manager at the council, said: “Taking into account Snetterton Heath’s prime location on the Cambridge to Norwich Tech Corridor, the site has not been able to attract many recent quality developments, with the exception of the new Nature’s Menu pet food production plant.
“While lack of electricity power is a factor, Snetterton Heath has developed little reputation as a desirable business destination beyond the well-established logistics, warehousing and transport operations.”
Mr Campbell goes on in his report to say the site has “no overall masterplan, brand or marketing plan”.
He said part of the issue was electrical supply being largely used up by existing businesses, limiting opportunity for expansion or new businesses to arrive.
With this being addressed by the council through a £3.43m upgrade, the further £150,000 is being proposed for a promotional campaign.
It is estimated the electricity upgrade could support 3,200 jobs on site.
Sam Chapman-Allen, cabinet member for investment, said: “Snetterton Heath is a key employment area for the district and a strategic site which forms part of the tech corridor.
“On October 16, the cabinet will be asked to endorse plans to invest £150,000 to raise the profile of Snetterton Heath among national developers and businesses, the development of planning standards for the site and an assessment to be carried out into how the site can be further enhanced.
“If approved, we expect this investment will help us achieve our goal of attracting high-tech businesses and jobs to the site as well as building on the strong logistics business activity in the area.”
