Keep your ears open radio fans - Norfolk could have a new star of the airwaves in the making.

Up-and-coming radio talent, Claire Chambers, has impressed the Hits Radio station this month by winning the news presenting category in the Hits Radio Star Awards.

The 20-year-old from Lingwood, near Blofield, clinched the top prize for the news presenting category after entering herself into the nationwide competition.

She has won a weeks training at Bauer's news hub at Key 103 in Manchester as well as an afternoon of reading the news for the Hits Radio station.

Claire is currently studying broadcast journalism at Nottingham Trent University where she is head of news at the student radio station Fly FM.

She said: 'I really didn't expect to win. My co-star from Fly radio, Tom Watts, was announced as the winner for the presenting category at the student radio conference and when they didn't announce my name I had pretty much given up hope.

'But I received a phone call a few weeks later telling me I had won and I just couldn't believe it!'

The former Acle High School and East Norfolk sixth-form student won the top prize after entering a demo of one of her news bulletins into the competition.

She said: 'Everything has happened so quickly for me. I only started working at Fly FM in September and now I'm going to be reading the news for the hits! I am nervous but really excited.'

As well as fitting her journalism degree around a busy work schedule with Fly FM - co-presenting her own show on Wednesday afternoons - Claire has also had work experience at Norwich radio station Heart FM for the past four years.

She added: 'We only have a listenership of around 10 people, so reading for the Hits will be a much larger audience for me.

'I absolutely love the radio. It's just great to be able to spend the day at work chatting and listening to great music. It is a working passion for me.'
