Broadland district councillors have voted to freeze their allowances for the next two years and cut their travel mileage rates from 60p to 40p a mile.
The ruling Tory group approved the two year freeze after an initial proposal was put forward by the Lib Dem group, and added the mileage cut proposal.
Under the freeze deal, basic allowances will remain at �3,426 - saving the authority �1,200.
The new mileage rates will also bring the council into line with HMRC rates.
Simon Woodbridge, council leader, said: 'We know that some residents are facing hard financial times and it seemed right that we should cut back too.'
