A teenager who was born with cerebral palsy has issued a plea for people to support a charity which helps youngsters with mobility difficulties.

Young Yasmin Cook, 13, from Thorpe St Andrew, is currently on the waiting list for a specially adapted trike from the charity Whizz Kidz.

The tricycle, which is worth about £900, will help give her independence and will enable the teen to go out on bike rides with her sisters Gemma, 13, and Jade, 15.

Without the charity, it would have been difficult for her single mum Mair May, who is Yasmin’s full-time carer, to afford the trike.

Ms May, who lives in Primrose Close with her three daughters, said: “Yasmin is such a smiley, bubbly girl, she lights up our lives.

“She is a very sociable little girl and wants to go out on bike rides with her sisters and the trike will enable her to do that.

“A lot of children out there could do with special equipment but equipment for special needs children is so expensive.

“Whizz-Kidz has been so good to me. The more people who donate, the more children like Yasmin will get bikes, trikes and wheelchairs.”

Yasmin, who goes to the
Clare School in South Park Avenue, Norwich, was due to get the new trike in January, but had to undergo a major back operation.

She hopes to get the equipment in the New Year.

Whizz Kidz is currently Blue Peter’s charity appeal, and selected Tesco Extras and superstores are selling unique Christmas cards which have been handmade by television viewers and celebrities.

One hundred per cent of the sales from each £1.20 pack will fund clinics to assess children for the right wheelchairs and equipment in 2011.

Yasmin said: “A special trike will help me get around and play with my sisters more easily which I love doing.

“Please get involved by buying Whizz-Kidz Blue Peter Christmas cards from Tesco. They’re trying to raise £80,000 to support even more families.”
