The brave Norfolk mother who released chilling video footage of her son's fatal motorbike crash says his legacy will be changing the behaviour of other drivers.

Brenda Holmes agreed to go public with the hard-hitting film, captured on her son David's headcam, showing his tragic death in June last year.

Released at the start of September, within hours the video went global. Not even Norfolk's road police team could have been prepared for the reaction.

To date it has had 13.2 million views online, and with it a promise from the head of Norfolk police's road unit to team up with Norfolk County Council to show the video in schools as part of a wider road safety campaign.

The footage shows the moment a car crosses into the path of David Holmes, 38, who was travelling at about 97mph down the A47 from King's Lynn.

His mum, a retired nurse who lives in North Walsham, said she has been overwhelmed by the reaction.

'I am just doing what David would want me to do,' she said. 'I am doing what I feel is right.

'David's legacy is to make an impact on driver behaviour. David would be very pleased about what we have done. He always wanted the video footage to be used as an educational tool.'

Mrs Holmes praised the work of Norfolk police and echoed the calls to see the video used in schools to promote safe driver behaviour from a young age. She added: 'I think it's much easier to teach people the right behaviour to start with rather than try to change behaviour later on.'

Chf Insp Chris Spinks, head of the Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing Unit, said the force is the only one in the country to release footage like David Holmes'. It was a decision, he said, which was not taken lightly and had to be signed off by Norfolk's Chief Constable. He said: 'We think the video has already saved lives. We know that there are people out there who have said that when they go out riding their bike or driving their car, that video is in their head.

'That's the one sad thing about this whole thing since the video; neither us or Brenda will ever know whose lives we've saved. Brenda will never know that there's a dad that's gone home to his kids, or a son that's gone home to his family that wouldn't have done before the video.'
