Norwich Cathedral is to host an exhibition depicting wall murals in the Bogside area of Derry in Northern Ireland.

The Bogside was the epicentre of what came to be known as 'the Troubles' – the 30 year conflict that began with non-sectarian civil rights marches in Derry/Londonderry against discrimination of Catholics in 1968. It was followed by years of harrowing sectarian violence, and concluded on Good Friday 1998 with a Peace Agreement in Belfast.

The exhibition, which will be at The Hostry exhibition space from November 3, consists of photographs of wall murals juxtaposed with historic photographs of the Bogside during the Troubles, taken both by local people as well as professional press photographers.

The murals depict key moments from this period as they affected ordinary residents. Unlike many infamous sectarian murals, the murals highlighted were never designed as political propaganda, declarations of identity or territorial markers.

The lay-out of the exhibition follows the story of the Troubles in Derry in chronological order, from the civil rights marches in 1968, through the battle of the Bogside in 1969 and Bloody Sunday in 1972, to the peace agreement in 1998.

The artists whose work is featured all grew up in the Bogside during this turbulent time. Each lost family and friends.

As part of this exhibition there will be a special day event on November 11 with a series of artist talks and Q&A sessions, and a panel discussion with invited speakers.
