A community-minded person has taken matters into their own hands in a bid to clean up the last boarded-up building in a famous Norwich street.

As reported, an appeal was launched in the Norwich Evening News earlier this year to trace the owner of the former Rose Inn in St Augustine’s Street.

Community bosses found the building’s last recorded leaseholder through the Land Registry and contacted them, but without response.

And now one person, who was not content to let the derelict building remain an eyesore, has stepped into the breach.

Stuart McLaren, secretary of the St Augustine’s Community Together Residents’ Association, said: “This unknown person decided to give this building a bit of a spring make-over, painting the boards canary yellow and hanging potted plants along its frontage, and then adding the words, ‘Just do it ’.”

The street, once a main thoroughfare into the city, has been undergoing a transformation in recent years, with a new one-way traffic system and pedestrianised area.

Several new businesses have opened in the area and a street once blighted by empty buildings now just has one.

Mr McLaren said that the mini renaissance has continued with an artistic community now springing up.

He said: “There are five new art galleries, studios and exhibition spaces in the street: Blackpuppie Studios, Peter Jamieson’s, Nunns Yard, Yallops and The Stage plus two older establishments: Norwich ScreenArt, specialising in screen printing on fabric, and Styx Tattoos (body art).”
