Scores of rainbows, brownies and guides joined forces in Norwich this weekend to mark the 100th anniversary of guiding by planting roses in the city centre.

More than 50 youngsters from the Mile Cross area got their hands dirty to honour the prestigious occasion by putting ten rose plants in Castle Gardens with the help of young people with learning disabilities and the Friends of Norwich in Bloom (FNIB).

The event was just one of a huge range of celebrations taking place to mark the occasion - later this year they will return to the site to plant a 100 in pansies in front of the roses, and in October they will join hundreds of other rainbows, brownies and guides at The Forum in a special event to renew their promises together.

Julie Brociek-Coulton, secretary of FNIB and guider for the 27th Norwich Rainbows, said: 'This is a fantastic opportunity for us as guiders to see our girls being involved in making Norwich look beautiful. The roses will be there for years to come and for visitors to Norwich to appreciate.'

The roses, which are a special variety called Girlguiding Centenary UK Roses, were put in by learning-disabled horticulture students from City College Norwich before being planted by the groups of four children.

Carol Bundock, president of Girl Guiding Norfolk, said: 'We are delighted to be working with Norwich in Bloom to plant the centenary roses, which will last much longer than the centenary celebrations.

'It's a cold Saturday morning and I'm very pleased with the number of girls we have had along to take part. We try to encourage them to become involved in a huge range of activities, and so outdoor things like this are ideal.'
