A teenager is appealing for local runners to take part in a fundraising 5k fun run in memory of her mother.

Ellen Wilson, 14, from Blofield, is organising the run on September 11 to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

Ellen was 10 when she lost her mother to cancer in 2008.

She said: “Losing my mum to cancer was the worst thing ever.

“I want to help raise as much money as possible so other people don’t have to go through what my mum did.

“I hope the people in the local community will support this run and help me to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK in memory of my mum.”

Men, women and children of all ages are encouraged to walk, jog or run the 5k route to raise as much sponsorship as possible. The event starts at 11am on Sunday, September 11, at Braydeston St Michael’s Church where Ellen’s mum Sara is laid to rest.

Sara was 37 when she died, after a seven-year battle with mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, a cancer in the cartilage of the spine.

With help from her friends and family, Ellen is mapping out a route around the church through the Braydeston and Blofield countryside that will hopefully suit experienced runners and novices alike and she hopes to raise at least £1,000.

Paula Young, of Cancer Research UK, said: “I think it’s fantastic that Ellen is putting on this event in her local community. It is terribly sad to hear about her mother but good to see something so positive being done in her memory.

“Cancer Research UK relies on the generosity and hard work of individuals like Ellen and I hope the people in the Brundall & Blofield area will give her plenty of support with her fundraising efforts.”

Registration for the fun run costs £10 per person. To enter or find out more: www.braydeston5k.co.uk.
