A record-breaking number of people are thought to have taken part in this year's Big Garden Bird Watch, with more results still to come.

A record-breaking number of people are thought to have taken part in this year's Big Garden Bird Watch, with more results still to come.

People who spent an hour recording the wildlife in their garden on January 30 and 31 for the RSPB survey have until February 19 to get their results in which will then be examined by experts.

The more records collected, the greater the accuracy of patterns and trends across the country.

Martin Harper, head of sustainable development, said: “We know that people care about the world around them simply because they give us an hour every year to record the birds in their garden for us.”

It is hoped the survey will give an early snapshot of the effect the cold snap has had on garden birds.
