Staff at a city centre department store have a summer of challenges mapped out as they aim to top last year's fundraising efforts.

The staff at Debenhams raised an impressive £6,000 for Breast Cancer Campaign last year, making them the top fundraising store in the region and this year they plan to top that by raising £10,000.

On July 23, 15 workers at the shop will be climbing Snowdon, in Wales.

Eight members of staff will attempt to swim 21 miles - the distance of the English Channel - in just 10 hours on August 16 at Norwich’s Esporta gym.

Sales manager Tracy Benton said: “Every year we try to do something to push ourselves and try to earn the sponsorship money and make it a challenge for ourselves.

“We walked a marathon last year, which we really enjoyed, so we decided to go for something a bit different with the swim and climbing Snowdon.”

Breast Cancer Campaign fund innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure.

Last year marked the tenth year of the charity’s partnership with Debenhams, which has raised more than £2.8m.

And it appears there is some friendly rivalry between stores to see who can raise the most, and the Orford Place store is urging people in the city to help prove that they are the most generous in the region.

Tracy said: “Last year the Norwich store came top for fundraising and we’d love to do that again.

“I think the other stores must think we’re all super fit because of the challenges we do, but we’re not, we’re just every day people trying to raise a bit of money for charity.”

Donations can be made at any till point in store.
