Give your home a 2012 update with flowers, birds and a touch of metallic. EMMA HARROWING takes a sneak peak at the interior trends for spring.

Think of spring interior trends and thoughts turn to florals, nature and fresh colours. It is the perfect antidote to the cold harsh winter.

In a few months time, when you pull on your rubber gloves and start the annual spring clean and declutter, you might start to think about how to update a tired old room. Now is the time to plan, as you might be able to pick some pieces up in the sales.

This year, one of the trends for your home is high gloss, shiny furniture and accessories.

Metallics are big news for interiors for spring. Gold and silver pieces, mirrors and sequins add a touch of glamour to a room. Mirrors can also be used to create the illusion of light and space.

A mirrored wardrobe can bring light and the feeling of space to a bedroom. Smoked glass furniture has reflective surfaces that fuse effortlessly with both monochrome colours and vibrant tones, such as gold, silver, and cerise.

Old wooden cabinets and chests of drawers can be updated with a coat of metallic paint to lift the tone of the room and create striking statement pieces. 'Glitzy gold' and 'shimmering silver' colours are fantastic at bringing a room to life with a renewed sense of style – without costing a fortune.

Stylish furniture pieces that have been delicately hand-finished with silver leaf or metallic tones are a modern design trend for 2012. Intricate wood carving, unique ornaments and lighting are ideal for creating this look.

The traditional spring trend for florals has been given an update for 2012. Taking inspiration from spring and summer's fashion trend for arty floral prints, cushion covers, upholstery and curtain fabrics take on a more Expressionist style with blurred, abstract and large floral prints.

Even crockery has taken on this New Floral style for spring, with teapots, tableware and linens providing a simple way to get the look. Florals also take on a retro style. Vintage inspired interiors continue to be a big trend this year and new collections include 70s style flower printed cookware and fabrics.

Last year's trend for our feathered friends also continues into 2012. Bird prints are in the majority of spring collections and will be found on wallpaper, cushions and china.

Of course if you mix these three looks together – arty florals, bird prints and a touch of metallic – your home will get a fresh look and will be on-trend for the rest of the year.
