Norwich City star Sebastien Bassong has apologised after photographs of him toting a handgun were printed by a national newspaper.
The defender posted pictures of himself shooting the gun and holding it to his lips on social media site Instagram earlier this month, drawing criticism from gun crime campaigners.
The 26-year-old said he was taking part in a “garden shooting session” and was practising for his daughter’s “security”, according to yesterday’s Sun newspaper, which printed the pictures.
But Norwich City said today in a statement that the firearm Bassong was pictured with was not a real gun, the player had apologised and that the matter had been dealt with internally.
It is believed the photographs were taken around a month ago, as the Canaries were battling to preserve their Premier League status.
Bassong had been criticised by gun and knife crime campaigners, including Damilola Taylor’s father, Richard. He told The Sun: “Footballers are role models. This kind of behaviour should not be tolerated.”
