More than 300 people in Norfolk have been caught using a mobile phone while driving as part of a month-long police campaign.

In the final week of the campaign road policing teams stopped 44 drivers after they ignored warnings to “zip up behind the wheel”.

In total 273 people have been given fixed penalty notices, one was arrested and another 75 will be dealt with by magistrates during the campaign.

Guy McCurley, Chairman of the Think! Norfolk road safety partnership, said: “While this campaign has ended, Think! Norfolk will continue to focus on mobile phone use through educational and training initiatives delivered by the partnership.

“The campaign has been about reducing the risk to Norfolk communities as a result of dangerous driving caused by mobile phone use.

“Think! Norfolk is committed to making the County's roads safer. Hopefully this campaign will have encouraged many more drivers to stop using a mobile phone, to drive more safely and to reduce the chance of them injuring another road user.”

Chief Insp James McLachlan challenged those who continue to ignore the law. He said: “Using a mobile phone whilst driving is foolish and unacceptable.

“It has been shown to multiply the chances of drivers causing a collision which could result in injuring or even killing someone. Is reading that text or making that call worth the risk of ruining yours and other people's lives forever?”
