Tanning salon on Westwick Street could expand with new plans

Karis Markovic, owner of Pineapple Sun Tanning and Beauty on Westwick Street, has submitted a planning application to Norwich City Council to expand her salon into the "derelict-looking" site behind the building.

The proposed centre would offer a sauna, plunge pool, lymphatic body motorised roller and a changing cabin with shower and toilet facilities.

Agents for Ms Markovic described the unused section of the property as "derelict", adding the development would not impact existing paving, steel balustrade or a protected tree at the opposite end of the proposed site.

They highlighted that noise levels are expected to remain low, with a maximum of six visitors at any time, plus staff, and only during daytime hours.

Ms Markovic’s agents also explained how the closing times during the weekdays and weekends "will ensure a quiet evening" for neighbours living near the business.

Pineapple Sun is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 8.30pm and over the weekends when it closes at 5.30pm according to its website.

Her agents said the project would result in "a much improved site" and would enhance the appearance of the underused space.

They said: "The existing site is looking derelict and is not fulfilling any use. The proposed wellbeing centre will improve the building's river elevation."

Ms Markovic moved her salon from Oak Street into the former Pure Residential building near TK Maxx towards the end of 2024.

During that time, she spoke to this newspaper describing the values of her salon.

She said the business prides itself on "safe tanning, cleanliness of the shop, a friendly atmosphere and a fully trained staff which can help customers pick out the best tan to suit them".
