Norwich driver 'ran over pedestrian' after Fiveways fracas

Mitch Woodbine, 38, is alleged to have hit the man while driving his Renault Clio at high speeds as he attempted to flee from the scene of an altercation in Norwich.

The man, who was thrown into the air and over the bonnet of the car, suffered fractures including a broken ankle in the collision on September 5.

Norwich Magistrates' Court was told police had been called to the Tesco Express store at the Fiveways roundabout in Earlham following a dispute.

It is alleged that Woodbine had chased a man into a store where he sought refuge fearing he might be attacked.

Josephine Jones, prosecuting, said it was alleged Woodbine had then driven off at high speed down Gipsy Lane and Gipsy Close, narrow residential streets.

He had mounted pavements and struck other vehicles, including an MG ZS, before running over the pedestrian and narrowly avoiding hitting police officers, she claimed.

Woodbine was later arrested at his home address at Eddington Way in Easton where he was found armed with a kitchen knife, the court was told.

Appearing in the dock in custody he did not enter pleas to charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, affray and failing to stop after a road accident.

Magistrates committed his case after being told GBH with intent was an indictable offence that could only be dealt with at Norwich Crown Court, with a plea and trial preparation hearing set for October 5.

They remanded him to remain in prison until the hearing due to the "nature and seriousness" of the offences and the likelihood of a lengthy sentence if convicted.
