Shock as man seriously injured after London Street brawl

Police were called to London Street at 1.16am on Tuesday after reports a fight had broken out.

It is understood that a rough sleeper was attacked by two other men, and when he fought back he was hit over the head with a bag of cans.

Officers arrived at the scene and the injured man was taken to hospital.

A cordon was put up around two separate areas in the street, one around a bin outside HSBC and another on Little London Street, where the man is believed to have been sleeping rough.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and was taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Police remained at the scene until around 2.30pm after a forensics team had worked to capture evidence from the scuffle.

Items believed to belong to the man, which were near the cordon, including a sleeping bag, a roll-up mat, and a shopping bag, were taken away.

Onlookers passing through the busy city street were shocked to see the scene.

Richard, who lives in Norwich said: “Things like this are happening all the time. Norwich is getting worse and I want to leave.

“I’ve lived in Norwich for seven years. It doesn’t shock me anymore."

A man who wished to remain anonymous said: “It’s a shame. Older people are terrified.

“Norwich is a lovely place, but there are so many homeless people now they’ve got cans and bottles you don’t know what they are going to do next."
