A drunk driver who almost killed a pedestrian after crashing at a bus stop and ploughing into another car was prevented from escaping by members of the public.
Igor Mlocek, 23, was more than twice the drink-drive limit when he lost control of his Audi A3 on a busy residential street in the middle of the morning.
Norwich Magistrates’ Court was told he had attempted to flee the scene of the wreckage only for three people to detain him until police arrived.
The crash, as he sped out of Lilburne Avenue onto Catton Grove Road at around 11am on April 19, came 10 days before he was jailed for breaching a previous suspended sentence.
Josephine Jones, prosecuting, said he had been seriously intoxicated when his Audi swerved around a BMW before hitting a lamppost beside a bus stop, narrowly avoiding a waiting passenger, before crashing into a car and demolishing a wall.
He later blew 80ml in breath – the legal limit is 35.
Mlocek, of Nelson Street in Norwich, pleaded guilty to drink driving.
The father-of-two, who works as a machine operator at Kinnerton chocolate makers in Fakenham, was banned from driving for 22 months and told to pay fines and costs totalling £1,017.
Geoffrey Dyett, chairman of the bench, said: "Your standard of driving was so appalling that you nearly wiped out a pedestrian, hit another car, then attempted to run off.
"Fortunately, members of the public were there to detain you."
Mlocek had previously twice failed to attend court; on one occasion because he was in HMP Norwich serving five months imposed after he failed to comply with a suspended sentence for carrying a knife in North Walsham Market Place in March 2024.
The court was told following his release he had been detained by immigration authorities on suspicion of being in the country illegally.
Julie Adams, mitigating, said: "He came to the UK in 2008 and is here legally but due to these convictions he is currently on immigration bail and is awaiting the fitting of a tag."
She added: "He fully accepts his actions and that he has issues with alcohol.
"After the collision he panicked and ran off."
