An investigation has been launched after the death of a Norfolk man was linked to asbestos exposure.
An opening hearing at Norfolk Coroner’s Court heard retired plumber John Anthony Beckett, of Thorpe Road, Norwich, died at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on April 14 this year.
Coroner Maeve Sykes was told Mr Beckett, 79, was born in Norwich on September 7, 1946. His body was formally identified by his wife, Marilyn Beckett.
A provisional medical cause of death was given as pneumonia due to asbestos-related fibrosing lung disease and chronic airways disease, with hypertensive heart disease.
The court heard further investigations are needed to establish the circumstances surrounding Mr Beckett’s death.
As part of the inquiry, the coroner ordered statements from HM Revenue and Customs to examine Mr Beckett’s employment history, together with reports from his GP and the hospital where he was treated.
The family has also been invited to submit a pen portrait of Mr Beckett and raise any concerns they wish the coroner to consider.
A full inquest has been listed to take place at 2pm on September 1 at Norfolk Coroner’s Court, where evidence will be heard into how Mr Beckett came by his death.
