Norwich Market traders give survey results their thumbs up

Stall holders at Norwich Market reacted after 2,500 people had their say on Norwich City Council's plans to refurbish the site in a bid to "better meet the needs of traders, visitors and our wider community".

The council released the results from the survey, saying 70pc of those who participated were in favour of the council's concepts while 30pc wanted no change at all.

Sophie Daniels, who runs Raw Gem Stone Jewellery, said: "It's essential for the stalls that there is a restructuring - 70pc is really positive.

Ben Cremer, who owns Primo Threads, hopes the plans will minimise anti-social behaviour. 

He said: "I think the plans will make this area safer and more inviting for families to spend more time here." 

Haroon Attaie, the owner of Norwich Kitchenware, hopes the plans will be implemented soon.

"And if there are also more safety measures, people feel safer to visit. 

"But I think that if they make little changes, it will make a big difference." 

WHAT ARE THE PLANS? 

The council consulted traders on a number of ideas for the Norwich Market.

Proposed plans were released for the Norwich Market at the start of the month (Image: Grieg and Stephenson Architects) The various ideas include an arcade running through the middle of the market, a courtyard in the centre, or a series of small open spaces that could be used for special events or pop-up stalls.

There are also ideas for a "market gateway concept" along Gentleman's Walk, which would include illuminated signs and artworks.

Some 62pc of respondents felt this concept would "improve the market". 

There was also "strong support" for later opening hours and 1,587 people would like to see live music at the market.
