Neighbours living in a close-knit estate have recalled the moment a "horrendous" fire which ripped through two family homes.

People living in Stevenson Road saw a slew of emergency services descend upon the area at 8.50am following reports of a blaze which gutted a roof of one of the homes.

Andy Wood, who lives next door to one of the affected houses, was alerted when "thick black smoke" filled the air.

Mr Wood, who's lived in Stevenson Road for 11 years, said: "I had my back door open and could smell something about eight o'clock.

"My first thought someone had a bonfire or something going but then it smelt electrical.

"My nephew then came running down the stairs and said next door was on fire.

"I went outside and it had gone up so quickly and it's ruined the roof.

"It was absolutely horrendous and everywhere was black.

"If it had been inside the house to begin with the whole house would have gone down because the flames were that bad and there was so much thick black smoke.

"People have been saying it could be seen from Cadge Road which is almost a mile away.

"I'm not sure where it started by the main flames were going up the wall of my neighbours and torching their roof.

"Thankfully everybody managed to get out safely.

"I've now had my gas and electric shut off and they'll need to see if it's affected my house."

David Kevins, who lives nearby, added: "The fire started in one of the gardens and just spread across both houses.
