More padel courts are on their way for the city now as plans to build them have been approved. 

The courts will be built at Taverham Recreational Facilities next to the high school on Beech Avenue in Taverham.

The proposals include building three indoor padel courts under a canopy as well as one outdoor court for the racquet sport, which is a hybrid between squash and tennis.

One person commenting on the plans said: "This is what Norwich has been waiting for. Padel is increasing in popularity tenfold.

"So many people want to take up the sport now, but currently the only available locations are outside of Norwich, so it is not easily accessible."

Another person said: "I am writing to express my enthusiastic support for the proposed application to build four new padel courts in our city.

"This initiative holds significant potential to enhance our community's well-being and foster stronger social connections."

A representation of the courts at the sireA representation of the courts at the sire (Image: Redhead Architects/ Broadland District Council) Broadland and South Norfolk District Council's decision has been welcomed by city folk as the nearest courts at the moment are at the Royal Norwich Golf Club near Great Witchingham and Blazing Padels in Reepham.

There are others slightly further afield at Heywood Health and Fitness in Diss.

Planners for the council said in their decision report: "The proposed development shall not be highly visible from Beech Avenue and it will not cause detrimental harm to the character and appearance of the area."

MORE COURTS FOR THE CITY

Padel is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, with several courts and clubs opening across Norfolk in the past couple of years.

There are also other plans in the works to open eight courts at Kirkham House on Whiffler Road.  

Court de Padel will be the city's first indoor padel centre after a long-term lease was signed for a unit at the property.

Court de Padel expects to have the facility open in late August or early September.
