Autumn may be on the way but in one city centre shop it remains as hot as the Za-hara desert.

For more than three months shoppers and staff in the Zara store in Chantry Place have been sweltering in 40-degree heat because of a broken air conditioning system.

And despite complaints from shop workers, who claim that a customer had even fainted in the changing room due to the heat, the air con still hasn’t been fixed.

Signs remain up throughout the two-floor store that read: "We are currently experiencing issues with the air conditioning in this store.

"Please accept our apologies while we carry out improvement works."

The management at Chantry Place said Zara is responsible for fixing the air con.

But the firm, which made a net income of £4.5 billion last year, has not even given a time frame of when it will be repaired.

A spokeswoman for Zara said: "We apologise to staff and customers for the temporary issues we are experiencing with the air conditioning.

"We want to thank them for their patience while we work to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

Industrial fans are dotted throughout the store but they are doing little to lower the temperature.

HOTTER THAN HELL

Staff and shoppers have been suffering in the heat in Zara as the city basked in heatwaves throughout the summer.

A worker at the store, who did not want to be named, explained how bad the working conditions have been.

She said: "The working conditions are awful.

"Customers are walking out after 10 minutes because it's so hot.

"I'm constantly getting headaches and many of the staff spend all day dizzy."
