There are concerns about a possible lengthy road closure as the reason for a sinkhole opening up is confirmed.

On Sunday drivers reported that Ringland Road had been shut due to a "huge" sinkhole.

Norfolk County Council put an emergency road closure in place at Ringland bridge and put diversions in place.

However, despite the cause of the sinkhole being clarified, nearly a week on there is no timeframe for when the road will reopen.

A county council spokesman said: "Having inspected the sinkhole that opened over the weekend, we can confirm that a collapsed culvert has caused the issue in Ringland Road.

"Our teams are now working to put in place repairs that will ensure the safety of road users and the protection of the infrastructure beneath the carriageway.

"A road closure will need to remain in place until those repairs are complete.

"We will be informing residents of the expected completion date of repairs as soon as possible."

She said: "It's a worry how long they're going to take to repair it, as I haven't seen anyone there.

"Me and my husband were coming home Monday morning and had to take quite a detour off the A47, to get back home.

"It's doable but it's a pain and the longer the road is not fixed the more of an issue such a detour will become.

"Even though there are signs off the A47 saying there should be no through traffic into Taverham, there will still be lorries and heavy vehicles going down there which can't be good for the road and bridge which is quite old now."

The county council reduced the weight limit from 7.5 tonnes to three tonnes in August last year as "significant deterioration" was investigated.
