Plans for a rooftop bar right in the heart of the city centre are back on the cards.

Back in August 2022, plans were submitted by Zafar Aslandok to open The Aslan rooftop bar and restaurant in Red Lion Street, in the rundown former Evans clothing store.

However, by February 2023 the plans for the rooftop area had been cut after folk living in Westlegate Tower raised concerns about noise complaints.

City councillors did approve the application for a cafe/bar, but not the use of the rooftop - a significant blow to the plans.

Now, agents working on behalf of Mr Aslanadok have submitted the first document to Norwich City Council since January 2023 - and plans for a rooftop bar appear to be back on the agenda.

The new noise assessment on the application, compiled by Noise Air Acoustics and Air Quality, affirms the return of the plans for the rooftop bar: "The proposed development involves the change of use within Use Class E from a shop to restaurant-cafe and bar.

"External alterations include the installation of a balcony seating area at first-floor level and the formation of a roof terrace."

Addressing the concerns of those living in Westlegate Tower, the document goes on to state that: "The proposed opening hours are 8am to 11pm daily."

Speakers have been proposed for the roof, one of the key concerns for local folk, but only to provide background music for the diners.

A structural report has also been filed to the portal by Canham Consulting, which has spent time assessing the property's roof to determine that it would be an appropriate space for a rooftop terrace.

The city council's planning committee will now reconsider the plans and aim to make a decision by June 4.
