A Bulgarian drink driver who returned to his home country four years ago before he could be prosecuted was finally caught after he returned to the UK for work.

Ivan Petrov, 33, was pulled over by police in King's Lynn on July 30, 2020, after officers saw him mount the kerb.

He failed a breath test and was due to appear in court later that year but failed to show up, with a warrant issued for his arrest.

However, it was not until earlier this week that police finally caught up with him again when officers saw him and some friends in a park in Lynn.

Police asked the group for identification and discovered the outstanding warrant for Petrov.

He appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, via a video link from HMP Norwich.

The court was told Petrov returned to Bulgaria because his wife had given birth there.

Travel restrictions during the pandemic then prevented him from returning to seek work.

He then returned in mid-March this year to look for a job and has been employed doing horticultural work.

The outstanding charges against him were driving a VW Golf while over the drink driving limit and driving without insurance.

Petrov blew a reading of 44 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when stopped in 2020. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Petrov pleaded guilty to both charges.

He has been released from HMP Norwich prison and magistrates have disqualified him from driving for 12 months and he is due to pay a total fine of £525.
