Siciliano takeaway in Norwich given one-star hygiene rating

Food inspectors from Norwich City Council have slapped pizza takeaway Siciliano with a one-star rating following an inspection on March 11.

This is the second time in three years that the takeaway has received a one-star rating, after a similar outcome in July 2021.

The hygiene rating had jumped to a four-star rating by January 2022, with its owner speaking out about how much the previous low scoring affected his business.

Now, the recent report filed by the inspector said that the business was "failing to comply with the law in many respects" concerning its food hygiene and safety.

Uncovered foods were stored in the fridge and the chopping boards were described as a "contamination risk".

The inside of the microwave and the fridge fan were described as "dirty" in the report, as were the lids of the sauce jars.

The manager at Siciliano has been warned that "a revisit is planned and formal enforcement action is likely" concerning the confidence in management. 

"Staff hygiene is inadequate," reads the report, stating staff had no access to soap when washing their hands.

However, the biggest "major non-compliance with legal requirements" in the report is that the manager is "not informing customers about the risk of cross-contamination with allergens" and does not "have a system for informing customers about the presence of allergens in the food prepared".

Legally, businesses need to inform customers of the allergens in their food.

The inspector also raised concerns about the "exposed electrical wiring" in the takeaway and the over-use of extension leads, which have been listed as a contravention of electrical safety.

Siciliano remains open and serving customers, but a revisit from City Hall food inspectors is imminent. 

Multiple attempts to contact the owner of the takeaway were unsuccessful.

The report follows Piccolos, nearby in Prince of Wales Road, also getting a one-star report recently.
