The FA Cup semi-final of 1992 may bring back bad memories for Norwich City fans but a shirt worn by a Canaries player that day has attracted a huge auction bid.

City legend John Polston had never thought about selling his shirts from his successful eight-year stint, between 1990 and 1998, which included the club finishing third in the Premier League and beating Bayern Munich in the Uefa Cup.

That really should have included the club's first FA Cup final but the Canaries managed to lose 1-0 to Sunderland at Hillsborough in 1992, who were struggling in Division Two.

Despite that, an auction on City's website currently has a tip bid of £2,000 from an anonymous bidder ahead of it closing at 6pm on Monday.

"I had a collector get in touch to find out if I was selling any shirts," Polston explained.

"I looked into it and found that the club auction shirts for ex-players. I thought long and hard about it and decided that I wanted the shirt to be sold to someone connected to Norwich City, someone that the shirt really matters to.

"The memory attached to that shirt isn't great - losing the FA Cup semi-final was one of the worst memories of my life, alongside getting relegated - so I am happy to sell it."

The shirt was listed on the website last Friday, with the first bid of £50 jumping to £1,805 just over three hours later.

"I have kids who could be getting married soon," added the 55-year-old, who made 263 appearances for Norwich.

"The shirt had just been sitting in the loft so it's nice to think the money can go towards that."

Polston does not have plans to sell any other collectables yet though and will keep hold of his "special" European shirts.

"Norwich will always be my club," said Polston, who now lives in Wokingham in Berkshire, where he owns a cleaning company and coaches part-time at a local academy.

"Football will always be part of my life."
