A care home resident living in the heart of Norwich said his secret to a long life is to have fun and stay active as he celebrates his 100th birthday.

Charles Capp, more widely known as Bill, lives in Cromwell House in Cecil Road.

The home treated him to a birthday bash to celebrate his century and he was thrilled to welcome his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren into the home for the affair.

Bill, who was born in Peterborough and used to play for Dereham St Nicholas Bowls Club, also received a telegram from the King.

The former steam train driver for London, Midland and Scottish Railway also worked as a welder, making commercial trailers for 39 years before he retired.

Speaking after the party, Angie Apurado, activity coordinator at Cromwell House, said: “Bill had a great day and was overwhelmed with the occasion.

“It was a great day for all at the home. We had such a great time celebrating Bill's birthday and everyone was very happy.

“I asked him what's his secret to a long life and his initial response was quite funny as he loves to joke around, so he answered, ‘breathe’, but then said ‘have fun, stay active and keep young at heart’."

“Bill is such a charmer and a very popular resident, he is a huge fan of Peterborough United Football Club and I hope to arrange a trip to see them play for him.”
