Plans for an 80-car electric vehicle charging area near Norwich, less than three miles away from its only other competitor, have been submitted.

Project developer, Markyate Partnership, has proposed for the new charging hub to be built off the A47 at Brundall, on land next to McDonald's in Yarmouth Road.

If approved the site would be less than three miles away from the area's only other electric vehicle (EV) charging site, Gridserve in Postwick.

Plans were initially submitted in August 2021 including six retail units but that element has been scrapped and replaced with a solar farm and cafe.

The new application, submitted by agent Gary John Architects, states the proposed development for: "The erection of a cafe, EV charging waiting area, a solar farm with battery storage, as well as EV-ready parking areas and cycle parking.

"As part of the development, 80 off-road parking spaces will be included to maximise the amount of EV chargers provided."

The solar farm will feature 425 ground-mounted photovoltaics panels providing the electrical supply to a number of EV chargers.

Postwick with Witton Parish Council has said it has some concerns about the new application, citing "increased traffic flow" at the Brundall roundabout, "congestion" and an "increased risk to pedestrians" at the site's entrance/exit.

The applicant however "believes this development should be supported as it represents a great opportunity to dramatically improve a prominent site within the local area".

A planning statement continues: "It will also create a number of jobs and provide much needed EV facilities for the area.

"The solar park will generate green energy for the retail scheme and a significant number of electric car charging points will be provided for motorists."
