A woman who lived on 13th floor of a city tower block until the age of 103 has just celebrated her 105th birthday in her new home.

Edith England was born in Great Yarmouth on January 2, 1919 and was the second eldest of five children, with one sister and three brothers.

On Tuesday Edith reached a rare milestone, celebrating turning 105 at Black Swan Care Home, at Thomas Tawell House in Magpie Road.

Prior to moving into Thomas Tawell House, Edith lived on the 13th floor of Norwich’s tallest residential building, Winchester Tower, in Vauxhall Street.

She lived there by herself from 1966 when the tower was built, until she was 103, before making the move to the care home in December 2022.

Growing up Edith's first job was working with her mother looking after guests in their home before working in a local shop.

In later life Edith married her husband Claude and were together for more than 40 years, having two daughters together.

Since then Edith's family has grown even more, where she now has four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and eight great, great grandchildren.

Edith says her favourite activities at the care home are the music events put on and spending time with the new friends she's made, "having a natter over mealtimes".

Edith is also one of a small number of people who have received a card from both King Charles III and the late Queen Elizabeth II for the occasion.

Among the many cards and gifts received at the home was a card from the King and Queen with the message: “What a splendid achievement.

"We send you our congratulations and warmest best wishes for your one hundred and fifth birthday on January 2, 2024."
