It may not have been a white Christmas in most of Norwich this year but it was for those living in one city street.

Kai Norton wanted to bring some festive cheer to Bethel Street while also saying thank you to the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) for helping him.

The 15-year-old combined Christmas lights with his very own snow machine and tunnel of light throughout this month to raise funds for EAAA.

That followed the air ambulance coming to his aid in October 2022 after being knocked off his bike by a car in Havers Road, Mile Cross.

“I was going down a hill on my bike and obviously had picked up some pace when a car pulled out in front of me without looking and I went into the side of it," Kai explained.

“I woke up about 45 minutes later and I was being treated by the air ambulance and the police.”

Kai said the EAAA supported him throughout his recovery, calling him while he was in hospital to check in and sending a card to his home.

He added: “I just wanted to raise money, I wanted to make people feel happy, joyful and Christmassy.”

The accident left Kai with a fractured femur and needing surgery. He says he was on crutches for six weeks after as well as now having metal pins in his legs.

Kai’s father, Tony Norton, said: “People driving by would always stop and there would be kids piling out to play in the snow and take photos and videos.

“He still has pain in his leg, especially when it’s cold and this time of year, so him going out to set up the machine shows his dedication.”

Kai raised more than £230 for EAAA, with his fundraising page still open at Justgiving.com.
