A man in his 70s who "abused a position of trust" has been jailed for a series of sexual offences against a child under 13.

Alfred Geoffrey Grimble, 78, of Martham, Great Yarmouth, groomed a single victim and carried out multiple offences from 2013 until 2017.

Grimble pleaded "not guilty" to 13 sexual offences and went before a jury at Norwich Crown Court earlier this year.

The offences included seven counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, five counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, two counts of rape of a child under 13 and causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

Following a week-long trial, he was convicted of all 13 counts by a unanimous jury and sentenced to 15 years in prison, one year on license and given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

He also admitted to a further two charges.

A victim impact statement, read aloud in court on Friday, detailed the effect Grimble has had on their life.

The victim's mother said: "The victim and the family would like to thank the police, particularly the officer in charge and the Harbour Centre, for their support during the three years while the case came to court.

"Other victims in a similar situation can step out of the shadows of secrecy and feel secure in the knowledge that abuse can end and justice can be served, with the help and support of the police and judicial service."

Detective Sergeant Mark Carrier said after the sentencing: "Norfolk Constabulary will always work to support victims of sexual abuse, regardless of when those offences occurred.

"While this sentence will not undo the pain and upset Alfred Geoffrey Grimble has caused, I hope it does allow the victim and their family the chance to rebuild their lives."
